Clay Alchemist: 365 Days of Sculpture

I'm Jonathan D. Lopez - sculptor, illustrator, and animator from Wyoming, Michigan. It is my goal this year to sculpt as much as possible. While I can't sculpt everyday, I will try to put out 3 sculptures weekly.

Check out the time lapse and 360º views of my sculptures on Clay Alchemist Secrets.

Why iMovie is a FAILURE

I haven’t gotten a good rant out in a while, so now is the time!

For the past week, I’ve been wondering if I should get Final Cut Express or Final Cut Pro.  To tell you the truth, I shouldn’t need either!  Why?  Because I only need something to patch together my files and drop an audio track into (which is what iMovie used to do).  Not all the fancy GARBAGE they throw into iMovie ‘09 or ‘10 - I can’t remember what I have.

The worst thing is that the posterization you get when importing a file is so ridiculously bad that it makes it unusable.  Most people think of sharp images when they think HD, but for some odd reason, Apple says this is HD:

This is (NOT) HD!

This is (NOT) HD!

When I open my files in Quicktime, they look SHARP, but when I put it in to iMovie, I literally lose half of the data it seems.  I go from gradual color shifts to posterization!  EWW.  I’m beginning to wonder why anyone uses iMovie.

It’s been a long time since I used QuickTime Pro, but I remember being able to drag and drop files, then put a soundtrack in, and that’s ALL I need…But I don’t even want to pay Apple if the results are the same.

Now I’m no expert on video editing or video codecs, but it seems like iMovie completely REMOVES a ton of information for no good reason.  I’m going to give QuickTime Pro a chance again I think.  I’m not going to buy some program like FCP if I don’t absolutely need it.  Seeing as I do NO EDITING other than what I do in iStopMotion, why would I need anything special?

When I figure all of this out, I’ll finally be able to produce good results and actually publish some new claymations.

So the question today is, do you hate iMovie too?

Notes

  1. lolshirts answered: I love iMovie… I use Final Cut Pro and iMovie… Depending on what I’m doing. Sounds like you should be using iMovie HD.
  2. dpersonke answered: Yes… the new iMovie makes no sense. I switched to FCP a few years ago. Apple changed iMovie from something simple to something useless.
  3. penguinwarz answered: I found it didn’t degrade the quality too much, even when the videos were shot in HD. That said, iMovie is still extremely annoying to use.
  4. radandred answered: When you export, it should look better. But I use FCP, even for stop-motion. It’s just better.
  5. davethatcameraguy answered: Yes, with a burning passion. I find it hard to believe that I have trouble working iMovie, but I know Final cut like the back of my hand.
  6. australblackbird answered: I’m using windows movie maker without problems… apple and their politics of software left the opinion of the users behind a wall.
